Description
Jacksonville OR: Attorney Benjamin Franklin B.F. Dowell's 1874 LAWS OF OREGON BookWhile preparing to list this volume for its book value alone, a quick googling of the owner's signature, "B.F. Dowell" turned up the historical connection to Jacksonville, and I really believe the book would be in a better home there rather than in a law collection. But that is up to the bidders.
The Organic and Other General Laws of Oregon: Together with the National Constitution, and Other Public Acts and Statutes of the United States. 1843-1872.
Published by Eugene Semple, State Printer, 1874. Hardbound in leather, 922 pages, size about 10-1/2 x 7 inches. Condition: calf covers are worn, front cover detached, spine top title label missing, bottom label worn. First free endpaper through page 2 are separated as a group from the rest of the binding, which is intact. First few pages have browned and brittle edges, remainder of book slight toning of edges. Several pencil and pen notations inside, quite brief, only add to the historic value of the book. Dowell has glued an 1879 newspaper article from the Daily Oregonian on the inside front cover, entitled "State Circuit Court Rules," and inside the back cover a clipping of an article about the decision of a case in which he was the plaintiff, B.F. Dowell vs. The City of Portland, which he won. His signature appears twice in the front of the book. Once on the first free endpaper, and once along the top of the title page. Please give this book a good home.
Benjamin Franklin Dowell, a native of Virginia, came west on the overland trail in 1850. He practiced law in Jacksonville, Oregon and in Washington, D.C. Dowell, with the assistance of his wife and others, owned the Oregon Sentinel newspaper in Jacksonville.
An attorney in Jacksonville, Oregon, Dowell was a native of Virginia, born in 1826. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in law in 1847. Dowell came overland to California in 1850, but migrated to Oregon almost immediately. With little legal business in Oregon, Dowell taught school and then ran a pack train from various points to the gold region of southern Oregon and northern California in the 1850s. He resumed practicing law after his pack train was captured by a group of Native Americans.
Dowell practiced law in Jacksonville, and specialized in pressing “Indian depredation” and military expense claims for Oregonians who had suffered genuine or fancied losses. Many of these claims were against the Federal government, so Dowell spent much of his time in Washington D.C., being shunted from one treasury official to another. Similar to most attorneys of the time, he had political ambitions. To gain a political career, Dowell purchased the Oregon Sentinel (Jacksonville) in 1864. Through his wife and a series of eight editors he ran the paper remotely for fourteen years. His political ambitions were never realized, and he remained a claims agent and attorney. Dowell died in 1897.

BY BIDDING ON OR PURCHASING THIS ITEM, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING SELLER TERMS:
1)
COMBINED SHIPPING/POSTAGE:
a. I happily combine shipping (where possible, sometimes it isn't), but orders over total will likely require tracking now because of unacceptable Postal Service delays resulting in INR claims. Tracking/delivery confirmation seems to speed up shipments. So there might not be a discount on several inexpensive items combined.
b. If you haven't paid yet for multiple purchases, please wait for a combined invoice, which may take up to 24 hours to send you. Don't worry, it's not a race to see how fast you can pay.
c. If you must pay immediately, make sure all the items are on the same payment transaction. I will then be able to combine shipping (if possible) and send you a partial refund for overpayment of postage. Some people make numerous multiple purchases with separate payments and look for a shipping discount. That will not happen, so please add your items to your cart, and when you are done looking at my stuff, buy it all at once. Thanks!
2)
POSTAGE:
All USPS postage rates are calculated using the most affordable (not the quickest) shipping class, based on a pre-sale estimated weight and size of the package. If you want to upgrade to a quicker, more expensive postal class, you must let me know BEFORE you pay.
3)
SALES TAX:
Ebay has taken over all duties for sales tax collection for all states that require it. I have no control whatsoever over who pays sales tax, it is out of my hands. Please direct all questions/complaints to the good folks at Ebay.
4)
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:
Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.
5)
REPRODUCTION OF IMAGES:
Seller is not selling the exclusive rights to reproduce images of the item offered. Buyer is of course free to reproduce as they wish, but seller retains and may exercise the right to reproduce any images of the item for any purpose before or after the sale, without permission from or compensation to the buyer.
6)
LISTING DISCREPANCIES:
If the Title, Description, and/or Photo on a listing do not match, for gosh sakes don't buy it. Mistakes happen. Let me know instead so I can fix the listing. If you do buy, the item described in the Title of the listing takes precedence over anything else. If you don't agree with that, I will cancel the purchase at your request.
